Summary

My dear Miss Bridgerton,

We have been corresponding now for quite some time, and although we have never formally met, I feel as if I know you。

Forgive me if I am too bold, but I am writing to invite you to visit me。 It is my hope that we might decide that we will suit, and you will consent to be my wife。

—Sir Phillip Crane

Sir Phillip Crane knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he’d proposed, figuring that she’d be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage。 Except… she wasn’t。 The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her… and more。

Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn’t marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking… and wondering… and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match。 Except… he wasn’t。 Her perfect husband wouldn’t be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand。 But when he smiled… and when he kissed her… the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn’t help but wonder… could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

i dont think this book was as good as it should have been honestly。 there was a lot of room for this to be the best book in the entire series but sir phillip himself really ruined it。 he just was impossible to like past his glaring flaws which were only sort of resolved, but i could not ever get over the fact he was just using eloise for like 90% of the book。 he barely got over his insecurities and issues by the end, and id actually go as far as saying he didn't get over them pretty much at all。 i dont think this book was as good as it should have been honestly。 there was a lot of room for this to be the best book in the entire series but sir phillip himself really ruined it。 he just was impossible to like past his glaring flaws which were only sort of resolved, but i could not ever get over the fact he was just using eloise for like 90% of the book。 he barely got over his insecurities and issues by the end, and id actually go as far as saying he didn't get over them pretty much at all。 he originally wanted to marry eloise so someone could be the mother of the children he neglects then also have someone to just have sex with, because he makes it his ex-wifes fault that he hasnt been intimate in 8 years。 sure thats unfortunate for him but near the end he literally YELLS at eloise and storms out because she didnt want to have sex at one specifc moment that she had asekd to have a conversation with him instead。 she literally said she didnt want their relationship to just be about doin tha nasty and he like has an entire freak out on her about how hard on HIM it was to be celibate for so long and how SHE COULD NEVER UNDERSTAND how UPSET he is over it and that SHELL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE PAIN OF HAVING A DEPRESSED WIFE。 he tells her basically he married her so he could have a woman who is basically just the exact opposite of marina。 which i mean ok。 but it wasnt DONE well in the story and writing。 it wasnt romantic at all it was really just possessive and self-fulfilling。 sure yes sir phillip did love eloise but the element of him marrying her for convenience and to have a new mother for his kids never went away。 he did have a brief moment of realizing how much he loves her and all that but AGAIN he never got passed/ denounced the fact he only ever wanted a wife for convenience, so yea he maintains that whole "women are there to make my life easier and for sex" mindset the entire time。 its cool and all that he does genuinely love her but i just thought that whole "youll never understand how my life sucks because i made mistakes that i never atoned for" thing was ridiculous。 again he may love her but the whole book was just him trying to use her for his own personal gain and to get his kids off his back。 four stars because eloise at times fought back against him but it was kinda always just brushed off with the whole "ugh men" and "WOMEN amiright" sentiments。 i get feminsim isnt rampant in 1800s england but considering these are written in the 2000s and eloise's whole character was built on the fact she never needed a man to define her kind of disappeared and it was bad。 i guess i wish there was more actual romance throughout the book especially because its about their correspondence through letters but i mean。。 it wasnt an epistolary book or anything and they didnt even love each other throughout the time they were writing to each other。 sir phillip asks her to be his wife through a letter for convenience then is just completely weirded out by her forever when she visits him, he thinks shes annoying the whole time, and he tells her to shut up basically like 20 times。 not really in any way romantic even if by the end its all "i love how much you talk eloise haha" like ok but you just spent the whole time screaming at her for talking and having opinions and not just marrying you the first day to be the kids new mommy。 idk all romance heroes have flaws but sir phillips were just really repulsing and not in any way endearing。 dont forget about his completely undealt with anger issues and propensity to violence。 yes he had a tiny redemption but it was "solved" through the trope of "woman as savior" thing where eloise just goes "you will never be your father" and he cries and its all fine。 like uhh ok。 didnt we deal with that in the duke and i or ?? i just dont like "angry man" and "healing female" tropes at all, like the whole " a wife will fix you" which is what eloise was reduced to。 his "fixer"。 i guess my favorite part, and honestly they only thing that saved this book was sir phillips children。 never would i think the children characters would be the best in a romance novel of all things but they actually kinda went through the worst of it and got a happy ending and they loved eloise, and she loved them which i thought was nice。 it was also good how sir phillip like finally realized he needs to be there for them after 8 years of just getting pissed at them for existing and ignoring the fact their nurse was literally abusing them。 so yea second best part was phillip finding out about the absue and tossing the nurse out immediately。 that i think redeemed phillip the most out of literally everything else in the book。 。。。more

Could not stand this “love story”。 Phillip is just not like able。 A horrible father too。

Philip was very cringe。 Eloise was flat。 The only reason I am giving it 2 stars and not 1 is because I loved the brothers' cameo。 Philip was very cringe。 Eloise was flat。 The only reason I am giving it 2 stars and not 1 is because I loved the brothers' cameo。 。。。more

Ok, so this is the first historical romance I’ve ever read, and the second romance, period。 Maybe this genre isn’t for me。 With that in mind, here’s my review:This romance is between spunky spinster Eloise Bridgerton and the titular Phillip, a baronet with the personality of an ingrown toenail。 She hopes he’ll be the answer to her spinsterhood。 Phillip hopes she’ll take over parenting the 8-year-old twin brats he ignores rather than parents。Phillip sees the inquisitive and loquacious Eloise as a Ok, so this is the first historical romance I’ve ever read, and the second romance, period。 Maybe this genre isn’t for me。 With that in mind, here’s my review:This romance is between spunky spinster Eloise Bridgerton and the titular Phillip, a baronet with the personality of an ingrown toenail。 She hopes he’ll be the answer to her spinsterhood。 Phillip hopes she’ll take over parenting the 8-year-old twin brats he ignores rather than parents。Phillip sees the inquisitive and loquacious Eloise as a breath of fresh air after years of marriage to the severely depressed Marina, who died by suicide。 To Phillip, Eloise represents daycare all day and hot sex all night。 What Eloise sees in Phillip is largely a mystery to this reader。 Despite Eloise’s patience and charm, Phillip is quick to jump to the worst conclusions, quick to anger, often absent without explanation, socially awkward, a negligent father, brooding, and taciturn。 All this, yet he blames Marina’s depression for his problems。Yes, he has a stock, unimaginative background of child abuse to excuse his。。。 everything (but mainly his lackadaisical parenting)。 But he doesn’t have the maturity or personal development to outgrow his past。 Eloise’s role is to mother his children, while mothering him into believing in himself。 In other words, Eloise must earn her place in Phillip’s heart by singlehandedly solving all of his problems for him and reforming his wildly out-of-control brats。 I thought she’d do a lot better as a spinster。 It all feels very surface-y。 There could have been a lot more unpacked。 What is it like to step into the role of wife and stepmother after a suicide? Where is the compassion for Marina? We know she married Phillip only because she was pregnant when the love of her life, Phillip’s brother, died at Waterloo。 Phillip married her as a matter of family honor。 Imagine: the love of your life dies, leaving you pregnant and unwed, and you’re stuck marrying his oafish and uncommunicative brother。 You suffer situational depression, postpartum depression, and suicidal ideation with no one to turn to。 Yet Marina is painted (I just realized she is quite literally a painting in this story!) as a flat, one-dimensional sad sack of no use to anyone ever, a burden Phillip is quite relieved of when she dies。 It’s heartless how the story treats her depression and suicide as a convenient plot point that frees up Phillip for spinster Eloise。 Happily ever after, but for whom? 。。。more

I expected more from Eloise’s story。 Philip only marginally turned it around in my opinion。 He annoyed me majority of the story honestly。

Eloise is one of my favorite Bridgertons, so of course I loved her book。 It was a little bit Sound of Music-like, with the horrible children, but I actually enjoyed that。

I found this one immensely creative, and more delightful than the last。 Eloise is such an unusual lady that her story deserved to be unconventional— and it did not disappoint!

Of the Bridgerton books this one seemed like pretty big stretch plot wise。。。 Like Eloise has always seemed clever, and this book kicks off with her throwing the rules of society to the wind and running off to some guys house where shenanigans ensue, and I just。。。 come on Eloise, you know how this works。 If you can't even kiss someone without getting married did you really think you could go across the country to meet someone without a chaperone and make some kind of choice after the fact? It was just reckless and out of her character to me (I get that she's impuslive but this felt like plain stupidity)。 And then I couldn't get over the fact, that even as the book was wrapping up, the only thing Sir Phillip wants was someone to have sex and watch his kids。 That was his perfect life, and all he wanted Eloise for。 I felt like he didn't care about her as a person from the beginning and still didn't really at the end and she was merely a tool to make his life better, and I walked away from the book feeling very disappointed for her and with this story over all。。。 With that said, it's clear that Julia Quinn knows how to writing and has a clean and fun writing style and great pacing。 My biggest reason for only giving three starts is that the plot felt weak to me from beginning to end。 。。。more
